If you have a wall big enough to mount one of these larger-than-life beauties you will have a trophy guaranteed to amaze. People who have reason to know can tell you that Black marlin fishing just might be the ultimate sport fishing experience. Whether you haul the whole fish home for dinner for the whole town or just tag, brag and release, you will have a story to tell. The coloring of this spectacular creature is like that of an expensive and sophisticated automobile. The dorsal side, comparable to the convertible roof of your sports car, is not actually black but dark blue. The underside is silvery white with light blue racing stripes.

Speed

Blacks are very fast. They have been clocked at over eighty miles an hour. That’s how fast they can unwind your line off your reel once you have hooked one. This fish has a streamlined design. The upper jaw tapers out into a long sharp point like the nose cone of a rocket. They are powered by an incredibly strong crescent-shaped tail.

Body Shape

The long narrow body is the ideal shape for racing through water at alarmingly high speeds. It resembles a speedboat or perhaps a torpedo. It’s an effective predator and you wouldn’t want to get in its way. Anyone who hopes to take home one of these gorgeous monsters needs patience. They aren’t easy to find and they aren’t easy to hook. Experienced fishermen know they may wait for hours before they get a bite.

Speed

Once they have taken the bait, the fight is only beginning. With black marlin fishing, they don’t surrender easily. And their high-speed swimming has broken more than one line. Black marlins like live bait. Unfortunately so do sharks. Sharks can rip a marlin to pieces before its captors can haul it into the boat. It’s a lot like blue marlin fishing.

Fishing

Even under the best of circumstances, it’s a challenge to get one of these monsters into a boat. Although the males rarely weigh four hundred pounds, the females can be much larger. Some of them weigh in at four digits.

Record Breaking Marlin

Female black marlin are much larger than the males. They can weigh over a thousand pounds. The world record holder was over fifteen hundred pounds.

Danger

These are not fish to be taken lightly. If you can imagine an angry thousand- pound female coming toward you with a bad attitude and a bayonet, you have some idea what you are going to be fighting with. Fortunately for you, they would usually prefer freedom to revenge.

Cost

Fishing for these splendid creatures is not an inexpensive undertaking. They are found in the waters near places like Africa, Peru, Mexico and Australia. If you don’t live near the warmer parts of the Pacific or Indian oceans, you may have to spend some frequent flyer miles.

Habitat

Black marlin are not deep sea fish. They prefer to live on the continental shelves or in the shallow waters near islands or reefs. The Great Barrier Reef off of Australia is the only confirmed breeding ground of the blacks.
